Six Library Customers Choose 3M's Vast Host Of Solutions
3M RFID, Automated Materials Handling and Digital Signage Meet a Variety of Library Needs
3M Library Systems announced recently several new customers from across the U.S. have selected 3M library solutions to meet the demands in their local communities and better serve their patrons.
Madison Library District in Idaho chose the 3M Intelligent Return and Sorter System FX for automated materials handling. Madison is undergoing a renovation project that will double their physical size as well as their circulation, which is already close to 400,000. Unable to add staff at this time to help with the increased workload, the library sees the new system as a solution to ease the burden of the extra work they expect. The 3M system can handle more than 1,200 items per hour with minimal staff intervention. Installation is scheduled for late August. The library's grand opening is scheduled for September.
Portland Public Library in Maine has adopted 3M RFID to help meet their productivity and security needs following the refurbishing of its Main Library. The aesthetics of the new glass 3M Detection System Model 9900 gates complement the library's glass, slate and natural finishes décor very well. Portland Public Library sees 600,000 patrons cross its threshold every year.
The State College of Florida has implemented 3M RFID and self-service at two of their locations: Bradenton and Venice. By doing so, the college will streamline the inventory process and help ensure that items are on the shelves when their some 12,000 students need them. The 3M SelfCheck System offers increased efficiency and is easy for both staff and students to use, with industry leading first-time success rates to help ensure high usage.
Tempe Public Library in Arizona has installed three 3M Digital Signage units, with two screens located at the main entrance of the library and one at the children's library entrance. The library's intent is to increase the overall communications with the library community, and 3M digital signage fits the bill. The system will serve as an important tool to post information about programs, classes and other patron services, as well as book lists and recommended reading. The digital signage will also help create awareness of lesser-known library services, such as research databases.
Bloomington Public Library in Illinois replaced its current RFID system with 3M RFID. Five 3M SelfCheck Systems with Integrated Disc Media Unlockers will help combat a spike in disc media theft at the library. Unlike Bloomington library's previous system, 3M's solution can verify that the media case checked out is the same one being unlocked. Because of 3M's open architecture design, the 3M product can simultaneously read both the existing collection media and the items newly tagged with 3M RFID tags, thus making re-tagging unnecessary. In addition, a five-bin 3M automated materials handling system with patron induction will provide real-time check in with the option for a printed or an e-mail receipt before sorting the returned items into one of five bins based on the library's predetermined selection. Bloomington Public Library has 700,000 annual circulation.
Waco Public Library in Texas chose 3M RFID and the 3M Intelligent Return and Sorter System SL Classic Three-Bin unit for its new Waco West Hoover Branch. A 3M customer for more than 20 years, the library saw 3M RFID and automated materials handling as a natural migration and cost effective solution due to their past experience with 3M quality and performance. The new library is expected to open in September 2010.
