RTLS Solution: Navis Introduces Navis RTLS Solutions

Navis, the global leader in enterprise software solutions for logistics asset visibility, control and optimization, last week launched Navis Edge Manager's Real-Time Locating System (RTLS) at TOC Europe in Istanbul, Turkey. The new product provides a DGPS-enabled RFID system for tracking equipment using existing wireless infrastructure that provides higher accuracy than traditional RTLS solutions at lower total cost. This solution is designed for marine terminals, distribution centers and other applications where the real-time locating of assets is critical. This revolutionary new approach to RTLS further demonstrates Navis continued dominance in software innovation for asset visibility and control.

Navis Edge Manager's RTLS fuses a combination of sensor and communication technologies to provide real-time tracking of assets. An RFID tag with a Differential Global Positioning System or DGPS chip is affixed to assets. The "location aware" tag determines its position and then communicates its tag ID and geospatial position through a WiFi network to the Navis Edge Manager RTLS application

The integration with DGPS allows the RFID tag used by Navis to communicate extremely accurate equipment positional data over existing 802.11 WiFi wireless networks thereby eliminating the need for expensive RFID reader infrastructure as required in traditional systems.

The Navis Edge Manager, Navis' industry leading middleware solution, receives the tag data, filters it then sends the data to Navis' SPARCS TOS, yard management or other applications. These solutions use the positional data to optimize task assignments to equipment operators and provide real time location data to increase visibility and control over valuable assets

"While many RTLS solutions use active RFID technology, not all active RFID tags are capable of providing extremely accurate real-time location information," said Jim Burleigh, Senior Vice President of Products, Navis. "Navis Edge Manager's RTLS provides a higher degree of location accuracy and works over a wireless infrastructure which not only reduces implementation cost but also enables two-way communication between the DGPS chip and the system."

About Navis
Navis is the global leader in proven, mission-critical solutions that provide asset and cargo visibility, control and optimization within the global supply chain market. Founded in 1988, Navis was the first company to automate marine terminal operating systems (TOS), improving productivity, velocity and visibility of cargo movement through port and intermodal facilities. Today, Navis continues to deliver advanced technologies to supply chain nodes in more than 50 countries. Navis SPARCS N4 is the world's leading TOS that enables logistics providers, such as APM Terminals, APL, and Dubai Ports World, to meet or exceed their business goals. Navis core technologies adapt for adjacent markets providing integrated logistics solutions like Navis Yard and Navis Edge Manager to optimize yards, rail and distribution centers for Navis customers like Johnson & Johnson, Wal-Mart, and Coca Cola Bottling Company. Additionally, Navis optimizes operations at small-to-medium warehouses with SmartTurn, an on-demand warehouse management solution that increases the visibility and control of all inventory processes. Navis' suite of products streamlines the flow of goods or "connect the docks" from major ports to some of the world's largest warehouses and retail chains. Navis partners with leading companies such as Psion Teklogix, IBM, IDENTEC SOLUTIONS and Motorola. With headquarters in Oakland, California, Navis has offices worldwide.
