RFID Software: RF Code Announces Active RFID Software Development Kit (SDK)
RF Code, Inc., a leading provider of enterprise-class active RFID technology, recently announced the immediate availability of a new SDK for software developers in the asset tracking and mobile asset management sector. The free toolkit was designed to provide developers with the information, resources and sample code necessary to build customized, scalable solutions for the enterprise. In addition, the company announced the first open interface to its award-winning line of fixed and mobile active RFID readers.
RF Code produces active Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems using battery-powered beacon tags that periodically broadcast their status using encoded radio transmissions. Fixed readers, such as the M200 model, are commonly used to monitor tag activity in pre-defined zonal coverage areas. The company's new M220 mobile reader can be used to aid in the discovery and management of assets in areas beyond the perimeter of a fixed reader infrastructure.
Software developers and systems integrators working in enterprise sectors including IT, healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, construction and defense can now take advantage of direct access to data collected by RF Code's active RFID reader family. Developers will have use of an open application programming interface (API) and the flexibility to develop industry-specific inventory, search and security applications. Among the utilities is a demonstration application for tracking and inventory on mobile devices including smartphones and handheld computers.
"This announcement is the first step for our company to embrace an open strategy with intelligence at the edge," said RF Code CEO Mitch Medford. "The SDK will allow system integrators in many diverse markets to produce vertical specific applications built on our industry-leading active RFID technology."
For the better part of a decade, RF Code has delivered the premier active RFID technology solution on the market. The new Reader Interfaces Specification provides details for customers and partners to link data from RF Code Readers to third-party software applications.
The SDK is prepackaged with a set of utilities which take advantage of new enhancements to RF Code's active RFID readers. Among the enhancements are:
- Intelligent Tag Reporting, which greatly reduces network traffic by setting readers to report only when an asset location or condition changes.
- Age-in and Age-out Functionality, which reduces the number of false alerts. The reader will not report a new asset as "found" until it observes a specified number of events. An asset will not be reported as "missing" until a specified amount of time has elapsed.
- Channel Comparison Reporting, which can be used to determine the direction assets are moving by monitoring changes in signal strength for each antenna.
- Tag Collection Utility, which puts the reader in mobile inventory mode to collect Tag IDs in a storage buffer. Users can download the list of tagged assets that the reader observed.
