RFID Reader: Sirit Announces New Solution For The Electronic Vehicle Registration Market

Sirit Inc., a leading provider of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, recently introduced its latest Automatic Vehicle Identification ("AVI") reader solution, the IDentity 5100, at the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association's 75th Annual Meeting and Exhibition in Vienna, Austria.

The IDentity 5100 builds on the Company's AVI expertise and advanced architecture to deliver an RFID reader solution for use in a variety of traditional and new AVI applications including Electronic Vehicle Registration (EVR) and Electronic Vehicle Identification (EVI) deployments. The IDentity 5100 reader was designed to communicate with vehicles traveling up to 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour) and supports North American, European and other worldwide regulatory environments making it a suitable EVR solution for any country.

"Our new IDentity 5100 was designed to leverage Sirit's best in class RFID reader technology and years of AVI experience to deliver a high performance solution for the emerging EVR market," said John Freund, Vice President, AVI Solutions, Sirit Inc. "Market estimates suggest that between five to ten percent of vehicles are not registered with government agencies resulting in lost revenue and public and environmental safety issues. The IDentity 5100 is a cost effective, global solution that can automate registration compliance and enforcement thereby reducing the number of unsafe vehicles on the roads."

The EVR Infrastructure

The traditional registration methods used by most agencies, both foreign and domestic, are annually replaced visual-based stickers. In an EVR system deployment, motor vehicles are outfitted with RFID transponders issued through vehicle inspection and registration offices.

An entire EVR system consists of RFID transponders, antennas, readers and a host computer database system. A unique electronic identification code is assigned to each vehicle via the tamper-resistant windshield RFID sticker transponder and each unique code is linked to a record in the centralized vehicle-database. The EVR reader network of fixed reader points (similar to electronic tolling plazas) and randomly located handheld readers then verifies vehicle registration compliance. A back-office processing system generates violation citations.

The IDentity 5100 solution protects both privacy and anonymity as no personal data is maintained on the transponders while authentication layers on the EVR reader provide additional security to the system making EVR an effective and attractive method to enforce transportation regulations. Motor vehicle compliance and enforcement is a growing issue throughout the world, and EVR is a solution which maximizes agencies' ability to collect registration fees, process violations, and drive future infrastructure funding.

"The IDentity 5100 continues Sirit's tradition of developing open standard-based solutions and vastly expands the addressable AVI market opportunities for Sirit in areas of the world that we have not traditionally focused. The performance and cost benefits of implementing our globally compliant EVR system are too compelling for countries - both large and small - not to consider using this emerging technology," concluded Freund.
