Case Study: Apparel Retailer Saves $233,000 In Receiving Costs

Source: Avery Dennison Printer Systems Division

In the former process, shipments were delivered to the receiving area in the back of the store, but detailed receiving was done at the point of sale (POS). An associate removed bar-coded labels from cartons in receiving, walked them to the POS and scanned the barcodes with the POS scanner. A receipt was printed and stapled to the shipping paperwork. If cartons were broken, individual items were walked to the POS and scanned.

With this process the associates had to walk the paperwork and items back and forth from receiving to the POS. They had to utilize two systems to process receipts — one for broken cartons and one for intact cartons. Receiving details had to be manually proofread.
