American Barcode and RFID Inc. (AB&R) recently announced the purchase of approximately 1,200 state-of-the-art radio frequency identification (RFID) portals from Supervalu Inc. as a result of the Albertsons merger.

"As a strong advocate of RFID technology, we purchased this RFID equipment at a substantial discount from Supervalu in order to provide a low cost, proof-of-concept system for anyone interested in experimenting with RFID," said Michael Stryczek, Chief Executive Officer. "With recent RFID mandates issued from Wal-Mart and the Department of Defense (DoD) to their suppliers we feel it's imperative that manufacturers start to understand this revolutionary technology and educate themselves on where the return on investment is for their business." Dino Farfante, President and Chief Operating Officer, added "this is the most exciting and innovative program AB&R has ever taken on and one we strongly feel could be a true business transforming initiative for those end-users that make RFID a core part of their business processes."

This RFID equipment manufactured by Symbol Technologies, a wholly subsidiary of Motorola Inc., meets the latest EPCglobal and ISO / IEC 180000-6 Gen-2, Class 1 RFID industry standard specification for UHF (860 to 960 MHz) frequency. For getting up to speed on RFID, AB&R is offering a complementary RFID Basics for Dummies book by Patrick J. Sweeney II on its web site.
