Value in RFID is not hard to find – if you're looking in the right places. Unfortunately, many RFID analysts, commentators and vendors have focused far too much attention on aspects of RFID that don't deliver measurable, sustainable return-on-investment to business. RFID value does not come from read ranges, standards or tag prices. Nor does it come from mandates or pilots. Yet these are the topics which have attracted the most attention surrounding RFID in recent years.

The specific processes a company chooses to modify with RFID and how tightly the processes are aligned with the business are what will decide the real value of an RFID system. Systems must be complete, fully integrated with business processes and information systems, and be fully scalable to support real-world operational requirements. Value comes from improved business processes that RFID information enables. This value is real, measurable and sustainable.
