DuPont Debuts MELINEX TCH Series
DuPont Teijin Films (DTF) is introducing a new series of clear films for the flexible electronics market, designed to reduce haze and eliminate the iridescence commonly found with polymer films containing refractive index mismatched coating layers. Utilizing proprietary technology from DuPont Teijin Films, the low bloom MELINEX TCH index matched polyester films provide Transparent Conductor Film manufacturers and users a clean, clear surface with superior optical properties. DuPont Teijin Films will highlight these and other new product innovations during Printed Electronics USA 2013, November 20-21 in Santa Clara, California, in booth H08.
“The growing handheld touch panel market has created the need for thin, durable transparent conductor films,” said Scott Gordon, business development manager, DuPont Teijin Films. “Those films require advanced flexible film substrates, and the MELINEX TCH Series now provides our customers with cost effective substrate solutions that are ideal for current and future consumer electronics applications.”
Standard polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polyester films can suffer from a blooming effect if the film experiences elevated temperatures, which effectively increase a film’s haze to unacceptable levels for the most optically sensitive applications such as handheld displays. Also, the application of a hardcoat layer to improve the film’s durability can create a refractive index mismatch, which is then seen in the form of iridescence--or a rainbow effect. To achieve optical clarity, the MELINEX TCH series polyester films combine low bloom properties with an index matched coating to one or both sides of the film. The films are available with and without heat stabilization, and they have been demonstrated for use in several touch sensor applications that utilize a hardcoat layer with indium tin oxide (ITO) and ITO replacement Transparent Conductors. The result provides device makers thin, lightweight and durable alternatives to traditional ITO coated glass substrates.
During Printed Electronics USA 2013, DuPont Teijin Films will present a technical paper at the conference titled, “Flexible Electronics – Advances in Polyester Film,” from 2:05 to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 21, and co-present a Master Class titled, “Flexible Substrates, Transparent Conductors & Barriers for Flexible Electronics,” on Friday, November 22 from 9:00 to 12:00 a.m. DuPont Teijin Films will exhibit at booth H08, featuring the MELINEX TCH series and other new products including MELINEX RFL1 white reflector film for lighting applications. DuPont Microcircuit Materials will co exhibit at booth H08, featuring its expanded suite of low silver, high-performance materials specifically tailored for membrane touch switch (MTS), capacitive touch, radio-frequency identification (RFID), and wearable electronic applications.
