Active RFID Tags: Radianse Focuses On Low-Cost, Smart Design To Make Patient Tracking Pervasive

Making patient tracking more accessible across more hospitals is the driver for a new category of active-RFID tags from industry innovator Radianse. The new Radianse hybrid tag combines low-cost -- $1 or less per use -- with extended battery life. It's designed to withstand the intense wear and tear of emergency and perioperative departments, assuring its viability hospital-wide.

Radianse will preview its low-cost hybrid tag at the 2008 HIMSS Conference and Exposition (Booth 1375) February 24-28 in Orlando, Florida.

"We've studied how the tags are used, for how long, and what healthcare providers want in terms of performance, presentation and cost to make patient tracking pervasive," said Paul Tessier, a Radianse founder and chief strategy officer. "A sustainable financial model that doesn't compromise patient comfort and convenience came out on top – and our hybrid tag delivers."

Alternative approaches, such as adding a sheath to a typical multi-use tag, add cost, bulk and complexity.

The new Radianse patient tracking tag has a 30-day battery, is completely watertight and cleanable. Each slips onto a hospital ID-band and is smooth, small and lightweight.

A simple button push shows remaining battery life – another week for every LED flash. While designed for the pace of emergency and perioperative care, the tag can be used on patients anywhere in the hospital. Radianse expects most hospitals to choose a mix of durable and hybrid tags for patient tracking throughout the hospital.

Final pricing and availability are expected in Q3, 2008.

Southern Ohio Medical Center represented on HIMSS RFID panel

Also at HIMSS, Greg Malone, supervisor of biomedical engineering at Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC), will present the hospital's evaluation process and key learning from using Radianse Reveal Asset Tracking. Mr. Malone's presentation is part of the HIMSS RFID Special Interest Group panel discussion on February 26.
