University Of Memphis' AutoID Lab Receives Significant RFID Tag Donation From Checkpoint Systems

To Educate Students and the Industry on Improving Retail Supply Chain Visibility

The Herff College of Engineering’s Automatic Identification (AutoID) Laboratory at the University of Memphis recently announced that it has recently received a significant donation of more than 650,000 Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags from Checkpoint Systems, Inc., a leading global supplier of merchandise availability solutions for the retail industry.

RFID is the technology that allows global companies like Kohl’s to improve their inventory control processes – ensuring that shoppers are able to find what they want, when they want it. It enables retailers to provide accurate inventory information to in-store customers and via the Internet, so that retailers can efficiently deploy inventory from all locations.

“These tags will ensure that students are able to realistically experience and experiment with Ultra High Frequency (UHF) RFID technology,” said Dr. Kevin Berisso, director of the AutoID Lab. “With this donation the Lab will be supplied with enough tags to perform smaller scale exercises in class and also conduct large scale activities that involve thousands of simultaneous tag reads – tasks that normally would have been done only as theoretical simulations.”

The AutoID Lab at the University of Memphis is geared towards the education of both students and industry in all of the automatic identification technologies (bar codes, RFID, magnetic stripe, biometrics, etc.). Instead of focusing on one technology, the Technology and Vendor Agnostic Lab prides itself in helping people choose the best technology for their specific needs. Housed in the Herff College of Engineering, the Lab collaborates with other departments in the Herff College and also the University of Memphis’ Fogelman College of Business & Economics to help provide answers and research to students and industry.

“At Checkpoint we are committed to education and are proud to be able to contribute to those actively improving retail supply chain visibility with innovation and new technology,” said James Wrigley, president and chief operating officer, Apparel Labeling Solutions at Checkpoint Systems.
