RTLS Position: Manuel T. Lowenhaupt, M.D., Joins Radianse As Chief Executive Officer

Radianse, Inc., healthcare's foremost provider of location-driven productivity solutions that optimize patient flow and resource management, has appointed Manuel T. Lowenhaupt, M.D., to the position of president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of directors. Dr. Lowenhaupt has over 20 years of diverse healthcare IT leadership and consulting experience, and he is an internationally recognized expert in leveraging technology to create measurable value. As Radianse chief executive officer, he will oversee the company's rapid growth and spearhead development of future solutions that use real-time location technology to improve hospitals' ability to serve their patients.

"For many years, I have had the privilege to work with major health systems across the country, and I believe I understand the difficult challenges confronting them: to ensure their limited resources are used most efficiently, to deliver information where it is needed for better decision-making and to provide their patients with the safest and most effective healthcare experience possible," said Dr. Lowenhaupt. "There is tremendous industry excitement about real-time location systems and their ability to help hospitals succeed in this complex environment. Radianse is a recognized pioneer in the industry, and I am thrilled to join the smart, talented individuals who care deeply about getting this technology right. They have succeeded in developing what is simply the most technologically robust, precise platform for real-time location in the healthcare environment."

Radianse was founded in 2000 with a goal of applying active RFID-based location technology to address common hospital problems such as patient-flow bottlenecks, missing and underutilized equipment, and frustrated staff and patients. Clients include Brigham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, PinnacleHealth (Penn.), Providence Health Center (Texas), Yale-New Haven Hospital and Helsinki University Central Hospital (Finland).

The company is unique in its ability to supply both the RFID infrastructure required for identification and tracking as well as the software applications that provide real-time visibility of patient status, clinical workflow and resource availability. Radianse integrates this information with data from other hospital systems (e.g., laboratory and order management systems), applying logical rules that allow hospital staff to anticipate next steps and proactively initiate actions based on what is happening around them. As a result, patients move throughout the hospital more safely and smoothly, clinicians spend less time on operational logistics and more time on patient care, and hospitals optimally manage their resources, increasing compliance, satisfaction and revenue.

"Hiring a healthcare technology company CEO who has spent more than 20 years enabling hospitals to meet their performance aspirations is just plain smart," said Arnold Milstein, M.D., co-founder of the Leapfrog Group. "That he is also an experienced physician and MIT-trained engineer is exceptional."

Internationally renowned for his work in clinical informatics, care management and clinical operations, Dr. Lowenhaupt has held senior strategic consulting roles for the past 17 years at the world's largest and most respected organizations, advising over 120 healthcare organizations in the United States and abroad. Most recently, he was an executive partner at Accenture, where he was a thought leader in the company's Health and Life Sciences practice and a practice leader in the area of clinical transformation. Dr. Lowenhaupt also was national practice leader at Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, where his focus was on facilitating physician adoption of new information technology. In addition, as a partner in the Healthcare Practice of Deloitte Consulting, Dr. Lowenhaupt headed the care management segment of its information technology practice.

Prior to his consulting career, Dr. Lowenhaupt practiced medicine and led a multi-specialty group practice in Boston for 10 years. He also co-founded Boston Medical Systems (BMS), a developer of interfacing tools, electronic medical record (EMR), and practice management software, and he worked as an investigator for the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Lowenhaupt received his undergraduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Phi Beta Kappa) and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School.
