Hurricanes have destroyed several commercial sites along the Gulf Coast over the last few years and Charlotte County Florida Airport (PGD) in Punta Gorda is no different. PGD was pummeled back-to-back by Hurricanes Charlie and Wilma, causing so much damage that a whole new airport had to be designed and built to save this battered commercial center that serves freight carriers like FedEx and United Parcel Service, over 300 smaller planes that use the airport as their home-base, plus transient traffic that PGD used to serve.

When designing the new facility in this post 9/11 world the airport needed to meet three security goals:

  • Satisfy access control and security requirements set by Department Homeland Security, Federal Aviation Administration, Transportation Security Administration, and Florida Department of Transportation.
  • Monitor and track aircraft as they land and takeoff.
  • Prevent theft and vandalism of aircraft and other airport assets.

PGD chose the comprehensive suite of Active RFID and Electronic Access Control solution offered by VUANCE Inc. (NASDAQ: VUNC) to meet all three goals in a cost-effective manner and timely manner.
