RDN Developed EPC Gen 2 Based Mobile Software For Retail Store Interaction

Rosendahl Digital Networks (RDN) has developed a software for Nokia E61i research demonstration with EPC capability. The software is designed for shopping in a retail store that has RFID (EPC Gen 2) tagged products. Within the testing process it was possible to check comprehensive product information on products, and pay via mobile phone. After the payment has been accepted the system logged the products as paid in the POS database, and the customer was able to leave the store. In this new way of shopping the waiting point of sales is no longer necessary.

The software was run on a Nokia E61i research demonstration device with EPC capability provided by Nokia Research Center Helsinki. The mobile phone is enabled with an EPC Gen 2 reader; "We consider it to be likely that in the future most mobile devices will include an RFID reader", said Markus Rosendahl the CEO of RDN.

In this project, Nedap provided the RFID based EAS security gates installed at the entry and exit of the store, which where seen as an essential component in this self check-out concept to avoid customer errors or theft. The Nedap system is able to communicate with the POS database; as when a customer takes an item out of the store, the system reads the attached RFID tag and communicates with the POS database. In case the customer did not pay for the item due to an error or theft, the item was not indicated as "sold" in the database, and the system will sound an alarm. The same gates have also been successfully used in previous projects, and testing.

The EPC Gen 2 technology has particularly been used in logistics. This new type of software would allow the same technology to be used through the entire supply of chain networks. Each product can be tagged in the manufacturing phase ab the same tag can later provide information in logistics, and in the retail environment.

This latest innovation is a follow-up for the other solutions developed by RDN under the brand name Senso Solutions. Senso consists of numerous software that utilize the RFID technology.

These kind of Technology solutions will change the future of shopping, and they have already been successfully implemented in NP Collection (Naisten Pukutehdas), which is an apparel brand from Finland. NP Collection is ready to expand the solution in their retail stores in St.Petersburg and other upcoming stores in Russia.
