Q&A: Capitalize On RFID Opportunities In Asset Tracking

It should come as no surprise that, outside of the supply chain, one of the most common uses for RFID is in asset tracking. The uses can extend from tracking items that are often misplaced, underutilized, or simply hard to locate at the time they are needed. Asset tracking can also be used to monitor the whereabouts and service history of assets that are used outside a company's four walls, such as waste containers.

Which market should VARs focus on, and do any untapped opportunities remain for VARs to increase RFID tag and label sales?

Daniel Miller, RFID program manager, BlueStar: Capital asset tracking is an area where the opportunities are endless. (A company's capital assets are not items offered for sale, but rather items the company uses in the course of its daily operations. Examples range from large items such as forklifts to small, high-value items such as laptop computers.) Tools for the VAR are rapidly improving and becoming more versatile. Specialty tags and a wide array of affordable software are making capital asset tracking a popular RFID application. VARs can readily show ROI to the end user and install a system from scratch or upgrade an existing bar code solution.

Rafael Mena, Americas asset tracking business development manager, TI RFid Systems: One key area where untapped growth opportunities remain for VARs is in waste and recycling management. There are a handful of forward-thinking municipalities already using RFID tags for recycling and waste management, where RFID can accurately track the pickup of individual waste containers. A waste hauling company or municipality using RFID tags on its containers can link the tags to a corresponding database. In this way, municipalities can quickly address any customer queries about their waste pickup and can confirm whether or not a container has been picked up. The RFID tag can also be used to link a container to a specific waste hauler and customer. This is important in municipalities where a household can select from a number of waste haulers within a particular neighborhood.
