Case Study: Motorola's Retail RFID Solutions

It is the focus of every retailer to increase sales and reduce expenses to maintain margins in today's competitive environment. Reducing out-of-stock items (costing retailers billions of dollars each year), improving stock relevance, stock replenishment speed and shrinking inventory all lead to improved customer service — helping retailers capitalize on customer demand, increase customer satisfaction and loyalty and ultimately increase sales. Increased inventory visibility and accuracy helps retailers reduce stock levels and the associated costs, as well as reducing returns and claims.

RFID is an across-the-board solution for retail, according to industry analysts and third-party studies, with incremental benefits and savings available immediately through improved access to better, more detailed information.

Many large retailers, such as Wal-Mart, Target and Best Buy are either mandating, or have initiatives that require their suppliers to RFID tag at the case and pallet level today, and phase-in item-level tagging. Retailers have experience with the benefits of bar codes, but realize that RFID can take it to the next level with vastly superior benefits for specific applications. RFID automates a number of otherwise manual data collection operations and improves the retailer's ability to locate, monitor and make quicker business decisions about the movement of merchandise throughout the store. RFID helps the retailer improve stock replenishment, and therefore inventory turns by improving availability to the customer.

Unattended, fixed and handheld readers, portals and readers systems, and vehicle-mounted RFID readers provide real-time information as RFID-tagged containers and pallets move through critical points of retail distribution from receiving and shipping to the retail store backroom.
